BWSL: Round 6 Preview

The Betfred Women’s Super League is back this weekend following an epic day of action at Wembley Stadium last Saturday which saw St Helens lift the Challenge Cup trophy for a record breaking fourth season in a row.

Leeds will be hoping to put last week's Challenge Cup Final defeat behind them as Lois Forsell's side returns to Super League action against Huddersfield Giants at Laund Hill (KO 2pm).

Sunday's clash is the third meeting between the two sides so far this season, with the Rhinos winning fixtures in both the league and cup earlier in the campaign. After a week off for the Giants, they hope to end their losing streak against Leeds that has seen them win once in eight meetings.

Huddersfield got their first win of their Super League campaign against Featherstone Rovers a fortnight ago. Currently coached by former Bradford and Leeds player Lori Halloran, the Giants have started with four tough opponents in Leeds, Wigan, St Helens and York, before they travelled to the Millenium Stadium to beat Featherstone 30-10 thanks to two tries from Lois Naidole.

Wigan Warriors will be looking to bounce back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon when they face Barrow Raiders at Craven Park (KO 1.30pm). The Warriors recorded a history-making win over Barrow in the opening round of the season after tries from Anna Davies, Isabel Rowe and Kaitlin Hilton secured an 18-4 victory on their first outing at The Brick Community Stadium but fell to defeat last time out against Saints.

Amanda Wilkinson’s Raiders have only won one game against fellow promoted side Featherstone earlier this season but will be hoping that home advantage could prove the difference against Wigan this weekend.

Warrington Wolves will travel to the Millenium Stadium on Saturday to face the Rovers for the second time this year (KO 2pm). The two sides last met in Round 1 with Armani Sharrock's side eventually defeating the West Yorkshire side 34-28. The Wire led 14-12 at the break before looking to have put the game beyond the Rovers with three unanswered tries to stretch their lead to 30-12.

The visitors fought back though and closed to within two points thanks to scores from Alyssa Courtney, Olivia Grace and Fran Copley but Nicole Barnett made the points safe for Warrington with a late try.

There will be no York Valkyrie or St Helens in action this weekend, with their Round 6 fixture set to be rearranged due to a relaying of the pitch at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
