BWSL: Round 5 Preview

The Betfred Women’s Super League returns this weekend with a blockbuster derby between St Helens and Wigan Warriors kicking things off on Friday (31 May, KO 5.15pm).

Saints are looking to end Wigan’s 100% start to the league campaign, a win for Matty Smith’s side would move the Red V level on points with the Warriors.

Wigan’s last victory over Saints came in the 2018 playoffs at Robin Park Arena, a 10-6 win for the Cherry and Whites. St Helens have won the last seven meetings since that fixture and are looking to extend that run to eight at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Friday.

They’ll be facing tough opposition though with the Warriors flying high under new Head Coach Denis Betts with four wins from four.

Featherstone Rovers kick things off on Saturday when they host Huddersfield Giants at the Millenium Stadium (KO 12pm). Neither team have a registered a win this season and both sides will be desperate to get some points on the board which could make this one of the highlights of the round.

Barrow Raiders recorded their first win of the season against Featherstone last Sunday and will travel to the AMT Headingley Stadium to face Leeds Rhinos this weekend (KO 2.45pm).

The fixture, which is also the first official meeting between the clubs in any competition, is part of an action-packed round as the Rhinos look to bounce back from their defeat to St Helens last time out and head into their preparations for Wembley with winning momentum.

Whilst Amanda Wilkinson’ Raiders have only won one of their last four, the side have been competitive since the start of the campaign with Venessa Temple scoring seven tries in all competitions.

York Valkyrie host Warrington Wolves at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (KO 12 pm). The Valkyrie have defeated their opponents on each of their previous three meetings – the most recent a 58-10 rout which featured 11 tries scored by nine different York players.
