BWSL: Round 4 Round Up

Round 4 of the Betfred Women's Super League kicked off on Friday (24 May) with Wigan Warriors, York Valkyrie, St Helens and Barrow Raiders all victorious this weekend…

Faye Gaskin scored all the points as St Helens ended Leeds Rhinos' three-match winning run to the start of the Super League season with a determined victory at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

The Rhinos dominated the opening quarter but were sloppy in attack and failed to turn possession and territory into points against a spirited home defence.

Gaskin slotted straightforward kicks either side of a fine solo try to give Saints a 10-0 half-time lead.

Leeds continued to pile on the pressure on the resumption, Keara Bennett pouncing and converting her own try.

But Saints once again showed their resilience in defence and another Gaskin penalty sealed a memorable victory, which takes them level on points with Leeds and league leaders Wigan Warriors.

Wigan thrashed Warrington Wolves 40-4 to extend their winning start and go two points clear at the top of the Super League table.

The visitors dominated throughout and raced into an 18-0 half-time lead before going on to secure a fourth win of the campaign with ease.

It was a tough afternoon for Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, their only score coming in the second half as a consolation. The defeat is their second so far this season, and they remain fifth in the table.

York Valkyrie bounced back from successive defeats with a 10-try hammering of bottom club Huddersfield Giants.

After suffering their first league defeat of the season to Leeds, and then being beaten by St Helens in last week’s Challenge Cup semi-final, the Valkyrie were in no mood for more disappointment.

Emma Kershaw scored a hat-trick and there were doubles for Eboni Partington and debutant Izzy Brennan, while Carrie Roberts, Jess Sharp and Bettie Lambert also went over, with Roberts adding five conversions in a 50-12 victory.

Barrow Raiders recorded their first-ever top-flight win by twice coming from behind to see off fellow promoted club Featherstone Rovers 22-10.

Both clubs were seeking their first league wins of the season and tries from Hannah Watt and Ashlea Prescott, one converted by Chloe Smith, edged the Yorkshire club ahead at the Northern Competitions Stadium as Michelle Larkin’s try and Jodie Litherland’s extras kept the home side within two points.

Round 5 of the Betfred Women's Super League will kick off on Friday 31 May when St Helens host Wigan Warriors in a highly-anticipated local derby (KO 5pm).
