BWSL: Round 5 Round Up

In Round 5, St Helens came from behind to end Wigan Warriors unbeaten start to the season with a 24-8 victory to join them at the top of the Betfred Women’s Super League.

The Warriors deserved their 8-0 lead late in the first half through Mary Coleman's try and the boot of Emma Knowles.

Wigan were seeking a first ever Super League win over Saints and a first victory at the Totally Wicked Stadium and bossed the opening half for long spells.

However, tries just either side of the break from Luci McColm saw Saints draw level and their pressure eventually told as Vicky Whitfield barged through to complete the turnaround before a Faye Gaskin penalty put the game on ice and a late Beri Salihi double put gloss on the margin of victory.

Eboni Partington's first-half hat-trick helped York Valkyrie keep pace at the top of the table as they crushed Warrington Wolves 44-4. Partington's treble came after Lacey Owen's opening try for the hosts was cancelled out by Charlie Magraw.

Bettie Lambert crossed on the stroke of half-time to put York 22-4 up at the break before tries from Alex Stimpson and Liv Wood extended the advantage.

Manuqalo Komaitai went over twice in the final 10 minutes to ensure an emphatic win over fifth-placed Wolves.

Izzy Northrop scored five of Leeds Rhinos' 13 tries as they defeated Barrow Raiders 68-0 - the prop starred as Leeds overwhelmed their opponents for their fourth win of the season.

Lucy Murray also scored twice with Caitlin Casey, Ella Donnelly, Grace Short, Bella Sykes, Evie Cousins and Beth MacMillan also touching down.

Elsewhere, Huddersfield Giants ran in seven tries to beat Featherstone and earn their first win of the season at the fifth attempt.

Both sides went into the game winless but tries from Jess Dadds, on her debut, Lois Naidole, Amelia Brown and Frankie Townend opened up a 22-0 half-time lead for Huddersfield.

The home side replied after the break with scores by Chloe Billington and Ellie Lamb, but any hopes of a comeback were snuffed out by a yellow card for Brooke Price.

Huddersfield took advantage to ease away with three more tries, including one for Mollie Iceton, who was recently promoted from the academy.

Betfred Women's Super League will return for Round 6 on Saturday 15 June with the competition pausing for the Betfred Challenge Cup Finals this weekend.
