Round 11 Round Up
12 May 2024

There was a full weekend of action in Round 11, as we take a look back at the six Betfred Super League matches spread across four days…
There was a thoroughly entertaining encounter on Thursday evening at the Halliwell Jones, as Warrington Wolves made it back-to-back home wins with a 20-8 victory over Hull KR.
The Robins’ winning streak came to a halt as the Wolves’ fierce first half performance ensured the damage was already done early on in the game.
Sam Burgess’ men were red hot in first forty and controlled the game with confidence, as well as winning the energy battle between the two sides.
Toby King starred with two tries on his 150th Warrington appearance, and a Matty Ashton penalty try put the Wolves 18-0 up in the opening 30 minutes, as they produced some wonderful attack.
Jack Broadbent hit back for the visitors moments later on his second Robins’ appearance to breathe life into the side, before a flash of Mikey Lewis magic, as he collected his own chip kick to cross, added another KR score on the 50th minute.
Unable to convert his own try, Willie Peters’ men trailed with half an hour left on the clock, but there would be no more try scoring action as the sides battled it out in an affair littered with mistakes towards the closing stages.
As Warrington head into their Betfred Challenge Cup semi-final tie against Huddersfield Giants with a strong win, Hull KR were unable to back up the big two weeks they've recently had, and struggled away from home once more. They will have to dust themselves down quickly for their semi-final against Wigan Warriors next weekend, as the Super League competition pauses for Challenge Cup week.

On Friday night, Leigh Leopards ran rampant against neighbours Salford Red Devils racking up a 42-12 victory at the Leigh Sports Village.
A rejuvenated Leopards outfit claimed their third win of the season with a derby drubbing against the Red Devils, as they made an extremely bright start with tries from both Umyla Hanley and Josh Charnley.
But Ryan Brierley, the former Leigh star, brought Salford back into the game on the 19th minute and closed a 12-0 gap to just six points.
Hanley and Charnley went on to score a second, as Charnley touched down to achieve a marvellous milestone of 300 career tries on the night.
And once the Leopards were leading comfortably, Matt Moylan and Lachlan Lam began to show their class, creating further tries for Matt Davis, Brad Dwyer, and Lam himself through some stunning attack.
Tim Lafai went over for a late consolation try for Salford, but it was to be Leigh Leopards’ night – a side who have really revived in recent weeks.

Over at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle, there was a close contest in the first forty between Castleford Tigers and St Helens.
Sione Mata’utia and Jonny Lomax’s individual efforts put Saints 8-0 up inside the first 30 minutes, but the Tigers would respond with Louis Senior's try in the corner.
Paul Wellens’ men would find themselves with 12 men, after a red card for Tommy Makinson for a late shot on Tex Hoy. Hoy was unable to return after failing is HIA, with Jacob Miller dropping to full-back.
As the sides entered the field for the second half with tension in the air, St Helens blew the hosts away from the off, by going on to score a mammoth 52 points in just 37 minutes.

A struggling Castleford were completely stunned by a sensational Saints performance, with things going from bad to worse when Liam Horne was sent off for a dangerous tackle eight minutes in to the restart.
The visitors went on to hit eleven tries, with second half braces from Jack Welsby and James Bell, and a hat-trick for Waqa Blake to round off an incredible 4-60 victory.

Similarly, Saturday’s fixture between Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors saw an evenly contested opening forty, with outstanding length of the field tries from Liam Marshall and Elliot Wallis.
Bevan French’s dummy and dance to the try-line edged the Warriors in front, as they headed into the dressing rooms with little to separate the sides and a tight 6-12 score-line at the break.
The sun continued to shine down on the John Smith’s Stadium, as Matt Peet’s men went on to stun the Giants in the latter stage – producing six tries to win 6-48 and regain top spot at the top of the Super League table.
French and Abbas Miski bagged braces, while Marshall claimed a hat-trick and Kruise Leeming was a fourth try-scorer of the afternoon.

The Giants and the Warriors’ heads will now turn to their Challenge Cup semi-final next weekend.
Catalans Dragons then proved themselves in Perpignan on Saturday evening, as they continued their unbeaten home run in Super League with a 26-0 nilling against Leeds Rhinos.
The Dragons have been on the wrong end of two heavy score-lines in recent weeks and showed real determination in Round 11, as they were fired up to face an injury hit Rhinos.
Tom Davies was on the scoresheet first for the home side 16 minutes in, but a youthful Leeds outfit persevered and wouldn’t concede again until the 54th minute when Tom Johnstone flew over in the opposite corner.
Leading 14-0 and heading into the closing stages, the Dragons had already wrapped up their win, but did not stop there and came up with two tries in two minutes from Arthur Mourgue and Alrix Da Costa in the dying minutes of the game.
It was without a doubt a gutsy and hard battle in the heat, but Catalans would prove too strong in the south of France.

Sunday was a day to remember in the capital for London Broncos, as they finally claimed their first win of the 2024 season - in a dramatic fashion.
The Broncos played hosts to fellow strugglers Hull FC who were first on the scoreboard when Herman Ese'ese crashed over from close range. But it wasn't long before Hakim Miloudi and Alex Walker combined to bring the Broncos right back into the game.
Jake Trueman and James Meadows added further tries for either side, before a string of passes found London's Robbie Storey who went over on the stroke of half-time, giving London a 16-12 lead.
It was the belief that saw the Broncos through in the second half. Despite conceding early on through Hull's Yusuf Aydin, they responded with three terrific tries from Jarred Bassett and Lee Kershaw, as well as Oli Leyland's incredible interception try to seal their first Super League victory (34-18).
