Round 5 Round Up
24 Mar 2025

Round 5 kicked off with a tie between the two winless sides in the Betfred Super League - and it was Salford Red Devils who claimed their first victory of the season on home soil, as they comfortably beat Huddersfield Giants.
Former Giant Esan Marsters crashed over for the opening try, with Harvey Wilson following suit for Salford’s second inside the first 20 minutes.
Salford’s star man Jayden Nikorima touched down for the hosts’ third, before bagging his brace after the break, as he danced his way over the try line.
Adam Swift and Tui Lolohea added points to the board, to ensure that Huddersfield wouldn’t go home scoreless - but it’s the Giants who find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table following the first five rounds, whilst the Red Devils picked up an important two points.

On Friday, there was an epic encounter between St Helens and Warrington Wolves.
The Wolves returned to winning ways, with Marc Sneyd shining on debut.
Saints were 2-0 up from an early penalty, before new halfback pairing Sneyd and George Williams combined beautifully for Wire’s opening try.
A Wolves penalty then put the visitors 2-8 up. It was a constant neck and neck thriller, as Morgan Knowles bulldozed over to level the scores.
This was short lived, however, as an electric Matty Ashton capitalised on a loose pass from Jack Welsby - and raced away to score in trademark fashion.
Saints debutant Dayon Sambou gave his side hope when he produced a flying finish in the corner, but Mark Percival couldn’t quite convert and Warrington held on in the final 20 minutes to clinch the spoils (12-14).
It was a fifth straight win for the Wolves over St Helens.

Meanwhile, there was an intense battle at a sold out DIY Kitchens Stadium as Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC went head-to-head.
Both teams were up on confidence and looking to build on their positive starts to the season, and this showed in what was a highly competitive encounter.
Trinity took an initial 8-0 lead through an early penalty and Jack Croft try, but powerhouse Herman Ese’ese hit back for the Black & Whites before the break, as he juggled with the ball and powered his way over - proving impossible to stop.
The tide then turned in the second stanza, as more Hull tries from Ed Chamberlain and Lewis Martin cemented the Black and Whites’ third Super League victory of the season (12-16).
Cam Scott’s score against his old club did make it a four-point ball game in the closing stages, but Trinity couldn’t quite comeback despite having dominated in the earlier periods.
John Cartwright’s men now occupy third spot in the table and have already exceeded their points tally from last year.

Saturday’s Super League then saw Sam Tomkins steal the show for Catalans Dragons, as they cruised past Castleford Tigers at the Jungle (4-26).
As well as Tomkins’ effort, tries came from Tevita Pangai Junior, Alrix Da Costa and Fouad Yaha as the Dragons eased to victory, securing back-to-back Super League wins and their first away win of the season.
Castleford’s sole try came from Innes Senior.

A stellar showdown took place at AMT Headingley, as Leeds Rhinos recorded a narrow win over Wigan Warriors.
An enthralling contest unfolded, as Riley Lumb's early try gave the home side the lead.
Liam Marshall did score for the Warriors to reduce the deficit at halftime.
Wigan eventually went in front after some Bevan French magic, but Jack Sinfield’s late try from Ryan Hall's wild assist on his 500th career appearance, as well as Jake Connor’s conversion, would prove to be the match-winners for the Rhinos (12-10).

Finally, a top of the table clash took place on Sunday and Sewell Group Craven Park continued to be a formidable fortress.
Table toppers Hull KR made it five wins from five with a 30-0 victory over Leigh Leopards, ending their opponents’ unbeaten run in style.
The Robins asserted their dominance in the first forty, with tries from Oliver Gildart and Kelepi Tanginoa and Mikey Lewis’ double putting them 22-0 up at the interval.
The Leopards improved in the second half and kept KR to just one score, although their fifth try had some incredible play in the build-up, before Tom Davies dived over.
