Round 16 Preview

Betfred Super League is back on our screens this weekend following the international break!

It’s Round 16 and it’s all to play for as we continue well into the second half of the regular season…

Friday 5 July

Warrington Wolves v Huddersfield (20.00) – live on Sky Sports

There’s a Friday night feast of action which kickstarts with Warrington and Huddersfield live exclusively on Sky Sports.

Sam Burgess’ men will need a win if they are to keep in and around the top four, as the likes of Salford and Catalans chase them down.

Likewise, the Giants have slipped to eighth place in the Super League table and will need the two points if they are to remain within the race to the Play-Offs.

The last time they met was at the Totally Wicked Stadium in the Betfred Challenge Cup Semi-Finals, with Warrington running riot and winning 10-46.

Warrington have won 11 of their last 14 Super League matches against Huddersfield Giants and have lost just one of their nine league matches at home against them.

But both sides have won just one of their last three matches. The two points on offer are much-needed for both sides - who will find their form in Round 16?

For Warrington, just Jordy Crowther and Joe Philbin remain unavailable through injury. And for Huddersfield, Aidan McGowan and Jack Billington are named in the squad after impressive performances in the Betfred Championship, with Thomas Deakin also back in their 21-man squad.

Wigan Warriors v Leigh Leopards (20.00) – live on Sky Sports and SuperLeague+

It’s a second instalment of Battle of the Borough on Friday night, as table toppers Wigan welcome Leigh Leopards to the Brick Community Stadium.

This is another chance for the Warriors to extend their lead at the top, but they should not underestimate a rejuvenated Leopards, who have their sights set on a late charge to the Play-Offs.

Wigan have won their last 13 home meetings with Leigh, and heavily beat their opponents in the reverse fixture earlier this year.

With all to play for and both sides on a mission, it is predicted to be a fiery contest.

Warriors head coach Matt Peet has made two changes to his squad as Adam Keighran and Tyler Dupree return from suspension to replace Kruise Leeming and Jacob Douglas.

And the Leopards have captain John Asiata back in their side for Round 16 – what impact will he have on the night?

St Helens v Castleford Tigers (20.00) – live on Sky Sports and SuperLeague+

St Helens are in action at home for the first time since May and will play hosts to Castleford Tigers. Both teams will be hoping to return to winning ways in Round 16, with Saints determined to keep up with rivals Wigan at the top.

Paul Wellens makes two changes to the Saints squad he declared for their last Super League round with Daryl Clark stepping out due to a minor muscle tear, and Konrad Hurrell also misses Friday’s game due to a neck injury.

The Saints are boosted though by the return of club captain Jonny Lomax, who suffered a hand fracture injury in our Round 12 win over Leeds Rhinos during May. Leon Cowen is the other Saint stepping in to this week’s squad.

There are five changes from Tigers squad that hosted Hull KR in their last outing. Sylvester Namo, Sam Wood, Sam Hall, Josh Hodson and Nixon Putt drop out of the 21, being replaced by George Lawler, Daniel Hindmarsh, Luis Johnson, Samy Kibula and Liam Watts.

The Totally Wicked Stadium is currently a fortress, with Saints having won 13 of their last 14 Super League home games. Can they continue this form against the Tigers?

The home side have also won the last five meetings against their visitors on Friday – will they make it six?

Saturday 6 July

Leeds Rhinos v London Broncos (15.00) – live on Sky Sports and SuperLeague+

London Broncos will travel to AMT Headingley Stadium on Friday and face Leeds Rhinos for a second time this season.

Leeds have won the last three home matches too - can the Rhinos continue to push for a top six spot?

England internationals Ash Handley and Harry Newman both return to the Rhinos' 21-man squad having helped the national side to victory over France last weekend in Toulouse. Sam Lisone and Andy Ackers have also both been cleared to play having completed their return to play protocols following concussion.

For London, Ethan Natoli and Rhys Kennedy come back into the squad after serving one match suspensions against Wigan Warriors. Sam Davis and Rob Butler also return to the squad after missing out through injury last time.

Hull KR v Catalans Dragons (17.00) – live on Sky Sports

Fans can get a taste of what’s to come at this year’s Magic Weekend on Saturday, as Hull KR entertain Catalans Dragons at home live on Sky Sports.

The Robins will face the Dragons for a second time this year but will be hoping that it is a better result this time around, having lost 36-6 back in April, in Perpignan.

Willie Peters’ men are just two points away from the top and could make it five straight wins at the weekend. The Dragons, on the other hand, have only won two of their last seven matches, which they will be disappointed with after such a strong start.

Matt Parcell returns for the Robins after missing the Round 15 win over Castleford with a shoulder injury, and Louix Gorman drops out.

Matthieu Laguerre, Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet and Yacine Ben Abdeslem are back in the Dragons squad. They replace Fouad Yaha, Jayden Nikorima and Micky McIlorum.

Both teams enter this game on the back of dramatic wins – will we see more drama unfold for a second week running?

Sunday 7 July

Finally, Sunday sees Paul Rowley’s Salford take on Hull FC.

The Red Devils have won their last three games – which includes wins against Warrington and St Helens. They will be looking to consolidate their Play-Off position but cannot afford to take Hull FC lightly – a side who have improved in recent rounds.

This will be the two sides’ first meeting of 2024, but it was the Red Devils who completed the double over their opponents last year...
