Round 15 Round Up

There were plenty of surprises in Round 15!

League leaders Hull KR cruised to another comprehensive victory, as they hammered Castleford Tigers 0-48 at the Jungle.

Jack Broadbent, Noah Booth, Tom Davies and Arthur Mourgue scored in what was a dominant first forty.

Jai Whitbread and Peta Hiku added further tries and Booth, Davies and Broadbent all went over for a second time as the Robins kept the hosts scoreless.

Willie Peters' men are now four points clear of second-placed Wigan Warriors, following the champions’ shock defeat to Wakefield Trinity on Friday night.

Daryl Powell’s team stunned Matt Peet’s men with a clinical performance at the DIY Kitchens Stadium and knocked up a 10-0 lead at half-time, thanks to tries from May’s Player of the Month Caius Faatili and Josh Griffin.

Adam Keighran managed to hit back for the visitors on the 43rd minute but the Warriors failed to find their usual rhythm, and Wakefield went onto score another through a trademark Tom Johnstone finish in the corner.

A kick through by Harry Smith was collected by Super League’s current top try scorer Jai Field, who touched down to reduce the deficit with minutes left on the clock...but it was too little too late.

This meant Wigan’s nine-game winning streak would come to an end in Round 15 (16-10).

Similarly, St Helens, who were arguably the underdogs heading into Round 15, were also able to end Leeds Rhinos' winning run as they produced an impressive performance on home soil.

Two penalty goals and a Deon Cross effort had Saints up at the break. They did eventually concede when Riley Lumb crossed in the corner, but continued to impress throughout.

Tries from Owen Dagnall and Tristan Sailor ensured the two points would go to the Red V in Round 15 - which is a huge boost for Paul Wellens' men and their positioning in the league table (18-4).

There was yet another upset on Saturday as Huddersfield Giants pulled off a huge win over Warrington Wolves.

The Giants had come agonisingly close to beating Wigan in Round 14 but had to wait another week for their second win of the season, but they did so in style at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Warrington’s woes were far from over as a determined Huddersfield took the lead firstly through Jacob Gagai following Tui Lolohea’s intercept and assist. Jake Bibby then added another.

Maverick Marc Sneyd got the hosts on the scoreboard with some individual brilliance, but the Giants refused to roll over as Taane Milne's try and Gagai’s second score put the game out of reach.

The Wolves upped the pace and came up with late efforts from Toby King and Jake Thewlis's fantastic finish, but Luke Robinson's men remained resilient and were able to see out the contest (16-24).

Warrington remain eighth in the table.

Saturday night Super League saw Catalans Dragons go head-to-head with Leigh Leopards in a searingly hot Perpignan.

Tesi Niu and Keanan Brand put Leigh up early doors, but the Dragons fought back from 12-0 down after Tevita Pangai Junior and Tommy Makinson both crossed.

Makinson missed two crucial penalty goals which happened to prove costly – one at the start of the game and one which could have given Catalans a 14-12 lead and would have been their first time leading in the match.

Momentum then swung in the Leopards’ favour when Joe Ofahengaue touched down.

And it was David Armstrong who produced the match-winner to send the travelling fans into raptures and his side into third place.

In doing this, a struggling French side were consigned to their six straight Super League defeat (12-26) and find themselves even further adrift from the Play-Off places.

Round 15 concluded with Salford Red Devils and Hull FC

The away side struck first through their playmaker Cade Cust, before Chris Hankinson hit back for a robust Red Devils in the first forty.

The Black & Whites would prove too strong, however, as they eventually racked up a total of seven scores from seven different players and moved back up into sixth spot.
