Round 14 Round Up

Round 14 of the Betfred Super League took place at the weekend, and here’s what happened as we pass the halfway point of the season…

League leaders Hull KR continued their celebrations on Friday after thrashing a struggling Catalans Dragons outfit at Sewell Group Craven Park.

There was to be no Wembley hangover for the Robins, as 2025 Betfred Challenge Cup heroes ran a whopping 12 tries past their opponents with nine different try-scorers, including braces from James Batchelor, Jesse Sue and Mikey Lewis (68-6).

The Dragons managed just one score which came from halfback Luke Keary – their first try in four matches and a record time of five hours and 12 minutes – but Willie Peters’ men were formidable once again, as their attention turns to the business end of the season.

Meanwhile, Castleford Tigers caused an upset over on the other side of Hull.

The Black & Whites had been hoping for their first home victory since mid-2024, but the Tigers came to spoil the party.

Tries from Innes and Louis Senior had Cas in control at half-time – on either side of Harvey Barron’s effort.

This control continued into the second half as scores from Daejarn Asi and Tom Amone appeared to have put the game out of reach.

Hull FC wouldn’t go down fighting, however, with a late double from winger Lewis Martin setting up a nail-biting finish. But it was Castleford who held out to earn their fourth Super League win (14-22).

On Saturday, there was drama in Dewsbury as Huddersfield Giants faced Wigan Warriors at the FLAIR Stadium.

A determined Huddersfield pulled off arguably one of their best performances of the season in Round 14 – almost beating and shocking the current champions.

Liam Marshall had opened the scores for Wigan, and in doing so became the club’s all-time leading try scorer in the Super League era.

It didn’t take long for the Giants to respond though, with George Flanagan and George King crossing before the break.

Super League’s current top try scorer, Jai Field, then added to his tally – forcing Flanagan to make his first error with the ball, before pouncing on it to touch down.

Joe Greenwood managed to edge the Giants further in front as he crashed over from close range and Wigan’s backs were against the wall.

But they found a way out, however – firstly as Field found a gap to put Jack Farrimond through and reduce the deficit to just two points heading into the closing stages.

Luke Robinson’s men looked to on their way to their second win of the season when Tom Burgess forced a Wigan error from the scrum, but with seconds left on the clock and the Warriors in possession, Farrimond finished a move to snatch victory at the death.

While it was absolute heartbreak for Huddersfield, the champions ensured they would keep up with Hull KR at the top of the table (18-22).

A lively Leeds Rhinos team continued their winning streak with a superb win over Warrington Wolves.

The Wolves were unable to return to winning ways following their devastating defeat at Wembley as the Rhinos racked up 36 points at AMT Headingley.

Their captain Cam Smith was at the double with Brodie Croft, Tom Holroyd, in-form Jake Connor and Morgan Gannon adding more scores to the sheet.

Josh Thewlis and Ben Currie replied in Warrington’s loss but it wasn't enough to overcome the hosts.

There was action in West Yorkshire on Sunday as Wakefield Trinity welcomed Leigh Leopards to the city.

This fixture was dedicated to ‘Team Clarkey Boy’ in aid of the Candlelighters charity. Trinity head coach Daryl Powell's grandson Clarke has been receiving treatment for leukaemia, and he led the teams out in what was an emotional day.

It was a thrilling contest in the sunshine at the DIY Kitchens Stadium – and could have been anyone’s game – but Joe Ofahengaue's late try on the last tackle of a set would swing it for the Leopards.

Leigh always led except for a short period in the second half and were able to open the scores before Wakefield even got a chance to touch the ball, as David Armstrong forced his way over the line.

Wakefield’s main man Max Jowitt replied almost immediately, however, before Armstrong bagged his brace and Darnell McIntosh crossed after a perfectly-timed pass from Lachlan Lam.

Oli Pratt managed to pull it back for the hosts before half-time, before it was heavily Wakefield-dominated in the second stanza and Corey Hall edged his side in front for the first time on the 63rd minute.

But Trinity were to be denied as Leigh found a way to win through Ofahengaue’s late match-winner (20-24).

Finally, St Helens travelled to Salford Red Devils in Round 14 and produced a 4-46 victory, with star winger Kyle Feldt scoring four tries on his return from injury.
