The Play-Off run in

With four rounds of the 2024 Betfred Super League regular season to go, the race for the Play-Offs is well and truly on.

Table toppers Hull KR have cemented their place in the top six as they push for their first ever League Leaders’ Shield. Below the Robins, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves have also secured their Play-Off place for 2024 and occupy second and third place. Out of these three teams, who will finish in the top two? Wigan and Hull KR still have each other to play in Round 25, with Sam Burgess’ Wolves also hunting them down.

After that, Salford Red Devils, St Helens and Catalans Dragons sit in the remaining three spots. This, however, could all be set to change following late season resurgences from Leigh Leopards and Leeds Rhinos, who are chasing down the above teams.

Just four points separate fourth and eighth place with four rounds left to play. As five teams are set to battle it out to book their place in the top six – who will be competing in this season’s Play-Offs?

Salford Red Devils

Form: W W L L W

Current league position: 4th

Remaining fixtures: Robins (A), Dragons (H), Hull FC (A), Warriors (A)

Salford agonisingly missed out on a Play-Off place last year when they finished seventh, but are the Reds finally rising again in 2024?

Their 60-10 victory over Huddersfield Giants last weekend highlights their determination to be there, but they face a very tough task in their last four matches.

The Red Devils face Hull KR, Catalans and Wigan during their final run in – three sides in the top six, and their matches against the top two being away from home.

Will Salford hold on to fourth spot?

St Helens

Form: L W W L L

Current league position: 5th

Remaining fixtures: Giants (A), Wolves (A), Tigers (H), Leopards (A)

Saints desperately need a change in fortune. They have won just two out of their last nine matches and are at risk of slipping further down the league ladder.

The Red V are on the road three times in their last four matches and can ill afford any more slip ups. They have already suffered costly losses from Hull KR, Wigan, Leigh and Warrington in this last month, which has resulted in their current position. Their ever mounting injury list hasn't helped either.

They did manage a dramatic win against Salford at the start of August, however, but will need to be better if they want to enjoy any form of success in 2024.

Two of their remaining fixtures include teams in the Play-Off mix. Undoubtedly, Saints will want to take points from the rest of the chasing pack and confirm their Play-Off place sooner rather than later, in hope of avoiding a two-year hiatus from Old Trafford.

Can Saints come through?

Catalans Dragons

Form: W L W L L

Current league position: 6th

Remaining fixtures: Warriors (H), Red Devils (A), Broncos (H), Hull FC (A)

Consistently inconsistent is one way to describe the Dragons’ season. Steve McNamara’s men started the campaign so strongly, before going off the boil midway through the year.

But now, with four rounds remaining, a Play-Off place is theirs to lose. Last year’s Grand Finalists sit in sixth spot but are by no means safe yet.

With the likes of Leigh and Leeds quite literally breathing down their necks, the Dragons will have to produce some top performances in their remaining four fixtures if they are to feature in this year’s Play-Offs.

Their last victory came against Huddersfield, but only just, and it was in dramatic drop goal fashion.

The pressure is on, as they face Wigan this weekend in a standout tie. The French side do have home advantage in their favour however, with Perpignan being a place where they have won eleven of their last thirteen home games.

Leigh Leopards

Form: W L W W W

Current league position: 7th

Remaining fixtures: Wolves (H), Tigers (A), Robins (H), Saints (H)

The Leopards looked dead and buried just a matter of months ago, but a remarkable resurgence means they are within touching distance of a Play-Off place heading into Round 24 this Friday.

Adrian Lam’s men endured a difficult start to the year and were dubbed as one season wonders by pundits and fans in the sport. But a confident 30-2 home win back in late April against Catalans sparked a revival in the Leopards, who have since gone on to play some attractive Rugby League.

Not only are they eight wins out of a possible twelve since the start of June, but this includes huge scorelines against St Helens and Salford, two of the teams also challenging for a Play-Off spot.

They have Warrington, Castleford, Hull KR and St Helens left to play – if they can pick up the points against the teams also vying for a Play-Off place, then it’ll significantly help their top six aspirations.

Will Leigh impressively break in top six?

Leeds Rhinos

Form: W L W L W

Current league position: 8th

Remaining fixtures: Broncos (A), Hull FC (H), Warriors (A), Robins (A)

Brad Arthur has worked wonders with his Rhinos outfit, and they are now in a position where they have the potential to save their season – something Leeds fans wouldn’t have thought was possible earlier on in the year.

The West Yorkshire side find themselves just two points behind St Helens and Catalans, but have they left it too late?

Their final four fixtures see them play the current bottom two as well as current top two. But they can’t underestimate the likes of London and Hull and it’ll be a tough ask when they have to travel to both Wigan and Hull KR’s fortresses.

But the Rhinos have already proved they can beat Wigan once already this year - emphatically too, and also Catalans in the previous round...
