BWSL: Round 7 Preview

The Betfred Women's Super League returns after last week's international between France and England with Leeds Rhinos and St Helens set to go head-to-head at AMT Headingley live on The Sportsman (KO 12.30pm).

Both sides had six representatives in Stuart Barrow's side that beat France 42-0 in Toulouse, but now they go up against each other as the fight for the League Leaders' Shield continues in Round 7.

The two sides will meet for the third time in 2024 on Saturday, with Saints having won both previous meetings in the league and Challenge Cup Final. Matty Smith's side managed to edge a 12-6 result at the Totally Wicked Stadium earlier in Round 4, thanks to half back Faye Gaskin scoring all 12 points, before the Red Vee continued their domination of the Cup tournament as they lifted their fourth Challenge Cup at Wembley Stadium last month.

A competitive season so far in Super League sees St Helens enter this week's contest in third place in the league table - two points behind joint leaders Leeds and Wigan Warriors.

The Warriors will travel to The Millenium Stadium to face Featherstone Rovers (KO 1pm). Wigan controlled their last meeting as they ran in nine tries, all converted by Emma Knowles.

Isabel Rowe crossed twice, in addition to tries from Grace Banks, Mary Coleman, and Anna Davies as the Warriors raced into a 30-6 advantage, with Brogan Kennedy replying.

Ellise Derbyshire extended the lead before Olivia Grace hit back for the visitors to make it 36-12. But Rowe completed her hat-trick and there were second tries for Davies and Coleman as Warriors pulled away to a 54-12 victory.

Sunday will see York Valkyrie host Barrow Raiders at the LNER Community Stadium (KO 12pm). The Valkyrie have been triumphant over their opponents on each of their previous two meetings including a 28-8 win earlier this season.

Emma Kershaw put York ahead inside the first dozen minutes before they went onto score four tries in ten minutes before half-time to put the game beyond Barrow's reach.

Savannah Andrade then went over for the visitors before Kershaw completed her quadruple as a 28-0 half-time lead was established. The Valkyrie were unable to add to their first-half tally, with Barrow's Emma Hutchinson's two tries the only points posted into the second 40 minutes.

Warrington Wolves welcome Huddersfield Giants to Victoria Park at 12pm with the two teams meeting for the first time in 2024.

The Wire ran in 22 unanswered points either side of half time to seal a hard fought 26-20 victory over the Giants when they faced one another last season.

The Yorkshire side had worked their way into a 12-0 lead with just minutes left of the first half thanks to the first of three tries for Amelia Brown and Amy Bennett but Wire stand off Michelle Davis sparked the come back on the stroke of half time.
