Smart Energy to power Betfred Super League video referee in 2025

Coming to a big screen near you – Smart Energy GB, under a new and extended partnership with Rugby League Commercial which includes a link with video referee decisions at all televised Super League matches.

In addition to their existing support of England Rugby League, Smart Energy GB will also become principal partners of Offload, the pioneering and award-winning community mental health programme driven by Rugby League Cares, the sport’s official charity - making the programme free to access in some of the traditional strongholds of Rugby League in which it makes such a difference.

Smart Energy GB is an independent, non-profit organisation that helps households and small businesses across Great Britain to understand how smart meters can benefit them, their families and the environment.

The partnership with Rugby League began in 2023 and has grown year on year with a growing emphasis on the sport’s digital channels, allowing players and clubs to communicate with supporters – and to help them save money, as well as reduce their carbon footprint.

Bobby Bahadori, Head of Partnerships for RL Commercial, said:

“It’s been a pleasure to bring Smart Energy GB into Rugby League for the last two years, and the relationship will go to another level in 2025 with the link to the video referee, and the partnership with Offload and Rugby League Cares.

“This will be the 30th season of the video referee in Rugby League since it was first introduced for the first Super League match in Paris in 1996 – and every try or no try decision will now carry the logo of Smart Energy GB on the big screen, for fans at the ground and watching on Sky Sports, SuperLeague+ or the BBC.

“The extension of the partnership to the Offload programme and Rugby League Cares is a reflection of the work they do around mental health which is so inspiring and important, and underlines the impact of Rugby League in the communities where it’s played.”

Phillippa Brown, Deputy Director of Special Audiences at Smart Energy GB, said:

Working in partnership with Rugby League and their Offload programme has been incredibly rewarding.

“The partnership has allowed Smart Energy GB to reach households through their love of Rugby League to understand how smart meters could help them better manage their energy bills. This has been vital for many people looking for ways to stay on top of their finances, so we’re excited to continue this work and build on what we’ve achieved.”
