Six standout rounds in 2025

With the release of the 2025 Betfred Super League fixtures, it is now less than three months until the competition's hotly anticipated return - and it promises to be another exciting and competitive season.

Will Wigan Warriors retain their Super League crown for a third year in a row? Which six teams will secure their place in the Play-Offs this time around? And how will Wakefield Trinity get on in their return to the top flight?

We've compiled six compelling rounds to watch out for in 2025…

ROUND 1 (Six opening spectacles)

The opening round has it all, as the new Super League season kicks off in emphatic fashion on Thursday 13 February with the Battle of the Borough, live exclusively on Sky Sports.

Wigan Warriors will launch their bid for a third consecutive title at home to local rivals Leigh Leopards, before Hull KR will attempt to go one better than last year’s Grand Final defeat, at home to Danny McGuire’s Castleford Tigers.

John Cartwright’s Hull FC have a tough test to begin with – they are the first team to travel to Perpignan and face Catalans Dragons, where expectations will be sky-high after both sides’ huge off-season recruitment drives.

Wakefield, returning to the elite after a one-year absence, will start their campaign against Leeds Rhinos at AMT Headingley on the Saturday, with this tasty West Yorkshire derby broadcasted live on the BBC.

Keep an eye out for St Helens v Salford Red Devils, which vows to be a scintillating encounter at the Totally Wicked. Their ties delivered all the drama last year, including the Red Devils ending their 44-year winless run away at Saints in Round 4 – but just what can we expect in Round 1 this year?

Then, there’s a ‘Battle of the Burgess’ which will bring Round 1 to its conclusion when Warrington Wolves clash with Huddersfield Giants – as former South Sydney Rabbitohs star Tom Burgess is set to make his Super League debut for the Giants against a team coached by his elder brother Sam.

Once again, ALL six matches will be broadcast LIVE on Sky Sports, with FOUR games LIVE on SuperLeague+ every week. You won't want to miss any of the action!

ROUND 7 (Grand Final Rematch)

Matt Peet’s men were crowned 2024 Betfred Super League Champions after a formidable 9-2 performance against Grand Final debutants Hull KR under the lights at Old Trafford back in October.

The victory was Wigan's seventh Super League Grand Final triumph and meant the Warriors became the first team in the Super League era to achieve the quadruple, as well as winning back-to-back Super League Grand Finals for the first time in the club’s history.

The two sides became well acquainted with one another in 2024, facing off a total of three times in the league and cup, before their blockbuster showdown at the Theatre of Dreams.

First, the Robins were victorious against their opponents back in Round 9, with a strong 26-10 win on home turf. Then, the Warriors enacted revenge with two significant victories.

There was a dominant 6-38 display from the Cherry and Whites in the Betfred Challenge Cup Semi-Final, which saw them go on to lift their 21st Challenge Cup trophy at Wembley.

And who could forget the blood and thunder battle between the two sides at The Brick Community Stadium, where Wigan came from behind to beat Hull KR 24-20, which ultimately resulted in them going on to lift the League Leaders’ Shield.

It had been an exciting neck and neck battle for top spot all year in 2024, with the Warriors eventually finishing two league points in front.

In Round 7 next year, they will meet for the first time in 2025 at the home of the Champions.

Willie Peters’ men will no doubt be out for revenge and will hope as a club they can build on the previous year. The Warriors, on the other hand, will be seeking another victory over the Robins and look to continue creating a fortress, whilst once again laying a marker down to the rest of the competition.

With both teams boasting an array of talent and an electric style of play, this fixture should certainly be one that’s written down in your diaries!

ROUND 8 (Rivals Round)

Rivals Round is back, and the 2025 Easter Weekend is bound to be an epic extravaganza!

Fans are in for a treat as six fierce rivalries will be renewed over the 17-19 April, with the round kickstarting with Wakefield Trinity v Castleford Tigers, who will meet for the first time since 2023.

Last time out at the DIY Kitchens Stadium, these two sides faced off in an all-important clash with the threat of relegation looming over them, and it was the Tigers who triumphed 12-28. After a year out of the top tier, Trinity are back with a vengeance and there will certainly be no love lost when these two neighbours come face-to-face.

Good Friday has three classics in store, as the tradition continues with the highly anticipated Hull Derby. Can the Black & Whites enact revenge for the Robins’ clean sweep of results against them last year?

And of course, there’s the famous Good Friday Derby annually contested between Wigan Warriors and St Helens at The Brick Community Stadium. The Saints travelled to Wigan and overturned the Champions last Easter, emerging 4-12 victors.

Local rivals Leeds Rhinos and Huddersfield Giants go head-to-head at AMT Headingley Stadium, before Rivals Round concludes with Leigh Leopards against Warrington Wolves, while Catalans Dragons take on Salford Red Devils in the south of France.

What memorable moments will we see this time around?

ROUND 10 (Magic WKND)

Magic Weekend will celebrate its 18th birthday in 2025, and returns to its spiritual home of St James’ Park, Newcastle in May!

The 2025 line-up includes a repeat of the 2024 Betfred Challenge Cup Final between Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves as the Sunday afternoon centrepiece – and a first ever Magic staging of the classic Super League rivalry between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos on Saturday night.

Wakefield Trinity will mark their return to Magic after a one-year absence from Super League with a match against their local rivals Castleford Tigers to round off the weekend on Sunday evening, and the action will kick off with two fixtures to revive memories of famous Million Pound Matches of the past – Leigh Leopards v Catalans Dragons, and Hull KR against Salford Red Devils.

Sunday’s programme will kick off with Huddersfield Giants defending their impressive Magic Weekend record against a Hull FC team who will be desperate to bounce back after consecutive Magic defeats against Castleford and London Broncos.

Will you be there? Tickets are on sale now!

ROUND 17 (Last year's 11th v the newly promoted)

In the second half of the season, Round 17 sees the promoted Wakefield Trinity take a trip down the M62 to face Hull FC at the MKM Stadium.

The Black & Whites, who managed to string just three wins together in 2024 and avoided finishing bottom of the pile on points difference, will be determined to ensure they don’t find themselves in the same position again in 2025.

The two sides will first meet in March at the DIY Kitchens Stadium before the return leg in July. It will be interesting to see how last year's 11th and the Betfred Championship treble winners come up against one another...

ROUND 27 (Play-Off Potential)

The battle for the top six went to the final round last season – can we expect a similar story in 2025?

Plenty will be on the line when the regular season reaches its finale – the final round will see Hull KR host Warrington Wolves – two teams who finished in the top three last year and met in the Play-Off Semi-Finals producing a mouthwatering clash.

Similarly, there’s a blockbuster clash between high-flying Wigan Warriors and a new-looking Leeds Rhinos – a fixture steeped in history where Play-Off and Finals Rugby League are concerned.
