BWSL: Round 9 Preview

There are just six rounds of the regular Betfred Women’s Super League season left to play with Wigan Warriors still sitting top of the competition tree as we head into Round 9.

Denis Betts’ side host Leeds Rhinos at Robin Park Arena on Sunday (27 July, KO 2pm) with the Warriors seeking their first home victory against Leeds, with the Rhinos having won all six previous away meetings with their hosts.

This game will be streamed live on The Sportsman, as they continue their coverage of the BWSL in 2025.

The last time to the two sides met in Wigan saw the Rhinos take an early lead through lively scrum-half Caitlin Casey who went over from close-range after a break by Ella Donnelly. The Warriors levelled after 15 minutes when Anna Davies dived over at the corner and Isabel Rowe’s touchline conversion attempt bounced away off the crossbar, but Leeds added two tries in the second quarter to take a 14-4 lead into the interval and eventually went on to win the fixture 24-4.

Hot on the Cherry & Whites' heels are St Helens who will be awarded a 48-0 scoreline after Warrington Wolves informed the RFL that they will forfeit their fixture this weekend that was scheduled for Sunday.

Following a disappointing defeat to Leeds last weekend, Huddersfield Giants will face reigning BWSL champions York Valkyrie at the LNER Stadium (KO 3pm). The Giants came agonisingly close to their first win against the Valkyrie in Round 5 this season with York having to withstand a second-half comeback to snatch a late 24-20 win.

It looked like it was going to be a straightforward afternoon for the champions when they led 18-4 at the breakthrough tries from Tamzin Renouf, Zoe Hornby and Jas Bell, with Amelia Brown responding for the Giants.

However, Huddersfield cut York's lead with further tries from Bethan Oates and Fran Copley, before Brown got her second to give the hosts the lead.

But with three minutes left, Sinead Peach went over to put Valkyrie back in front, with Rhiannon Marshall adding the extras.

The final game of the weekend will see Barrow Raiders host Leigh Leopards (KO 2pm) and with both teams currently sitting on four points a win for either side would see them leapfrog their opponent in the table. The Leopards marked their return to the top flight following promotion last season with an impressive 42-10 victory over the Raiders at Leigh Sports Village in Round 1.

A hat-trick from Leopards wing Hattie Dogus, two tries apiece from full-back Becky Greenfield and Kate Howard, and tries from centres Mackenzie Taylor and Mollie Young did the bulk of the damage.
